Does this calculator tell me what joist size to use?
No. It estimates layout quantity only. Joist size and allowable span depend on species, grade, spacing, loads, cantilever, code, and project design.
Why is one added to the number of spaces?
A run divided into equal spaces needs a framing member at both ends, so the joist count is the number of spaces plus one.
Does the rim-board result include all deck perimeter framing?
No. It reports two end rim boards across the deck width as a simple reference. Ledgers, beams, blocking, picture framing, and other perimeter details are separate.
What does stock-piece equivalent mean?
It divides waste-adjusted joist footage by the entered stock length. It is not a cut optimization and does not permit splicing where full-span joists are required.
Can I use this to verify a 24-inch joist spacing?
You can compare material counts, but the tool does not confirm that any selected spacing is structurally permitted for your decking or joist system.
