PPI connects those pixels to a physical output size. Changing only the PPI metadata changes the calculated print size, not the captured detail, when resampling is disabled.

Worked example: one file at three PPI targets

Consider a 6000 × 4000-pixel image. At 72 PPI, the calculated uncropped print size is approximately 83.33 × 55.56 inches. At 150 PPI, it is 40 × 26.67 inches. At 300 PPI, it is 20 × 13.33 inches.

These three cases use the same 24-megapixel source. The metadata value changes how pixels are mapped to physical dimensions; it does not make the 72 PPI version lower-resolution on screen if the pixel dimensions remain 6000 × 4000.

Suppose the output must be a square 1200 × 1200 avatar. The 3:2 source must be cropped or padded to 1:1, then resampled to the target pixel dimensions. Place the subject within a safe area because different platforms may display the square as a circle or apply additional crops.

Before export, inspect the image at the intended display size and at useful magnification. Check focus, compression, halos, clipped highlights or shadows, transparency, colour profile, orientation metadata, and whether sensitive metadata such as location should be removed.

Assumptions, limitations, and review

Image tools running in a browser can be limited by memory, canvas dimensions, file decoding, device performance, colour-profile support, and export implementation. Large images may fail, downsample unexpectedly, or become slow.

Contrast and tonal edits can clip highlights or shadows and can exaggerate noise or compression. Histograms and previews support review but do not replace calibrated monitoring or a physical proof for critical output.
