Time calculations become unreliable when the start and end rules are not explicit. A period can cross midnight, include unpaid breaks, pass through a daylight-saving transition, or span locations with different time-zone rules. Decimal hours are not the same notation as hours and minutes: 7 hours 15 minutes is 7.25 decimal hours, not 7.15.

Start by identifying whether the task is elapsed clock time, compensated work time, scheduled time, billable time, or calendar workdays. Those quantities may differ.
Payroll and employment rules cannot be inferred from arithmetic alone. Whether a break, travel period, on-call period, holiday, or training period counts as hours worked depends on jurisdiction, worker status, facts, and applicable agreements. A result should therefore be labeled as a calculation scenario unless it has been reviewed against the governing rules.

Convert minutes by dividing by 60. Apply any permitted rounding rule only after preserving the original record.

Worked scenario: an overnight shift
Assume a scheduled period starts at 10:30 p.m. and ends at 6:15 a.m. on the next calendar day. From 10:30 p.m. to midnight is 1 hour 30 minutes, and from midnight to 6:15 a.m. is 6 hours 15 minutes. The elapsed duration is therefore 7 hours 45 minutes.
If the scenario excludes a 30-minute break, the net arithmetic duration is 7 hours 15 minutes. Converting the minutes to a decimal gives 7 + 15 ÷ 60 = 7.25 hours. Entering 7.15 would understate the duration because the digits after the decimal represent a fraction of an hour, not clock minutes.
This example assumes no daylight-saving transition and no change of time zone. If the local clock jumps forward or repeats an hour, timestamps with only a displayed clock time can be ambiguous. Store the date, named time zone, and original source record. Separately verify whether the break and all recorded periods are compensable under the applicable rules.
For a separate comparison, an annual salary of 72,000 divided by an assumed 2,080 paid hours gives a nominal hourly equivalent of about 34.62. Changing paid hours, leave, benefits, bonuses, or the legal regular-rate definition changes the interpretation, so this division is not a payroll or overtime determination.

Define counting rules
State whether weekends, holidays, partial days, leave, travel, and on-call time are included.
Resolve transitions

Separate math from policy
Label the arithmetic result and obtain payroll or legal review for compensation, overtime, and recordkeeping conclusions.
Assumptions, limitations, and review
Rounding can create cumulative differences. Store the most precise practical source value, document the rounding increment and direction, and test the effect across a full pay or billing period. Do not use a calculator output to overwrite the underlying record without an audit trail.
Annual salary divided by a standard-hour assumption is only a nominal comparison. It does not determine worker classification, overtime eligibility, regular-rate calculations, benefits, taxes, paid leave, or local wage requirements.

Why is 7 hours 15 minutes equal to 7.25 hours?
Fifteen minutes is one quarter of an hour, so 15 ÷ 60 = 0.25. Clock notation and decimal-hour notation use different bases.
How do I calculate a shift that crosses midnight?
Attach dates to both times or split the interval at midnight, then subtract any separately defined excluded periods.
Can daylight-saving time change elapsed hours?
Yes. A local clock may skip or repeat an hour. Use the date and named time zone rather than relying on the displayed clock time alone.
Does a salary-to-hourly calculation determine overtime pay?
