Sample size matters. A player can have a high early-season rate based on a few events, while a larger sample may reveal a different level and range of variation. A metric can describe recorded outcomes without proving skill, causation, future performance, or suitability for selection.

Three worked sports examples
Baseball example: a hitter records 48 hits in 160 official at-bats. Batting average is 48 ÷ 160 = 0.300. This does not include walks in the denominator and does not distinguish singles from extra-base hits, so it should not be treated as a complete description of offensive value.
Team-outcome example: a team has 18 wins, 10 losses, and 2 ties over 30 games. Under an explicitly chosen convention that credits each tie as half a win, the result is (18 + 0.5 × 2) ÷ 30 ≈ 0.633. Another league may use standings points or exclude ties from a percentage, producing a different valid calculation for that rule set.
Shooting example: a player makes 72 of 180 eligible attempts, giving 72 ÷ 180 × 100 = 40 percent. The result should be segmented before comparison when attempt difficulty, shot type, competition level, playing time, or regular-season and playoff contexts differ.

Name the rule set
Record sport, league or governing body, season, competition level, and any historical rule version.
Define numerator and denominator
List every event included or excluded, including ties, overtime, forfeits, no-decisions, and eligibility thresholds.
Preserve sample context
Report games, attempts, innings, minutes, possessions, or other exposure with the rate.
Avoid prediction claims
Use the metric as a description of recorded data and separate forecasting, scouting, and causal conclusions.
Assumptions, limitations, and review
Comparisons require aligned definitions. Regular-season and playoff data may involve different opponents, schedules, incentives, and sample sizes. Historical comparisons can be affected by rule, equipment, field, scoring, and data-collection changes.
A rate can be influenced by teammates, opponents, venue, role, selection, and opportunity. It should not be used alone to rank people, determine health or injury status, or make high-consequence eligibility and employment decisions.

Why is the denominator important in a sports statistic?
It defines the opportunity base. Hits per at-bat, points per game, and points per possession describe different questions.
Can I compare regular-season and playoff percentages directly?
Only with context. Opponents, sample size, role, schedule, and incentives can differ, even when the arithmetic formula is the same.
How should ties be handled in winning percentage?
Use the official league rule or clearly label an analytical convention. Some systems use half credit, standings points, or a different denominator.
Does a high average predict future performance?
Not by itself. Prediction requires sample size, uncertainty, context, aging, role, opponents, and an appropriate forecasting method.
Why is bowling scoring not just pins divided by frames?
Strikes and spares award bonuses based on later balls, so the sequence of deliveries affects the final score.
