Two worked examples: knitting gauge and quilt binding

Knitting example: a finished panel should be 50 cm wide, and a washed, blocked swatch measures 20 stitches per 10 cm. The basic count is 50 × 20 ÷ 10 = 100 stitches. If the pattern requires a multiple of 4 plus 2 edge stitches, 100 already satisfies the repeat, so the cast-on becomes 102 stitches after adding the edges.

If a different swatch measures 18 stitches per 10 cm, the same 50 cm width would require 90 stitches before repeat and edge adjustments. Substituting the first count would change the finished width. This is why yarn label categories and unwashed swatches should not replace a project-specific gauge check.

Binding example: a rectangular quilt measuring 60 in × 80 in has a perimeter of 280 in. Adding 20 in for joins and finishing gives 300 in. With 42 in of usable width per strip, 300 ÷ 42 ≈ 7.15, so eight strips are required. Final fabric quantity still depends on strip width, seam allowance, bias or straight-grain method, shrinkage, and cutting layout.

Assumptions, limitations, and review

Craft estimates cannot account for every maker, brand, defect, pattern revision, or material response. Test unfamiliar materials and preserve extra stock when color or batch matching is important. Recheck the calculation after changing size, gauge, repeat, fabric width, or finishing method.

Do not use nominal yarn weight as proof that two yarns are interchangeable. Make a swatch and compare gauge, drape, fiber behavior, care, and pattern requirements. For garments, verify body measurements, intended ease, and finished schematic dimensions.
