Volume

Worked example: rectangular gravel base

Suppose a rectangular area is 12 feet long and 10 feet wide, with a planned compacted depth of 4 inches. Convert the depth to feet first: 4 ÷ 12 = 0.333 feet. The geometric volume is 12 × 10 × 0.333, or approximately 40 cubic feet.

Convert cubic feet to cubic yards by dividing by 27: 40 ÷ 27 ≈ 1.48 cubic yards. If the planning allowance is 10 percent, multiply by 1.10: 1.48 × 1.10 ≈ 1.63 cubic yards. The ordering decision may need to round up to the supplier's delivery increment.

This example does not determine the correct depth, compaction factor, subgrade preparation, drainage design, load capacity, or material specification. Those requirements come from the project design, local conditions, product information, and qualified professionals.

Measurement and professional limitations

Measure the actual site where practical and divide complex shapes into smaller rectangles, triangles, or circles. Record deductions and overlaps separately. Recheck the unit after each conversion, especially when depth is entered in inches while length and width are in feet.

Waste is not a universal percentage. Tile layout, board lengths, pattern matching, breakage, excavation irregularity, settling, moisture, and compaction can produce different allowances. Supplier calculators and coverage labels may use loose, compacted, dry, or wet quantities, so compare definitions before ordering.
