Assume a planned route is 12 km with 600 m of total ascent. A flat-ground planning speed of 4 km/h gives 12 ÷ 4 = 3 hours of moving time. If the planning method adds one hour for 600 m of ascent, the base movement scenario becomes 4 hours.

Adding a 20 percent uncertainty allowance gives 4.8 hours, or 4 hours 48 minutes, before separately planned breaks. The calculation should not be treated as a universal hiking rule.
