How to test a microphone correctly

A microphone test is most useful when you separate connection problems, permission problems, signal level, background noise, and actual recording quality. Start with the live meter: speaking should create clear movement without staying near the clipping ceiling.

The RMS and peak values on this page are digital signal estimates derived from browser audio samples. They are not calibrated sound-pressure-level measurements in dB SPL. The noise-floor sampler records the quietest practical baseline for your current room, device gain, browser processing, and microphone placement.

Use the short local recorder to judge intelligibility, plosives, hum, room reflections, gating, and automatic gain behavior. Browser and operating-system processing can alter the signal, so compare recordings under the same settings when evaluating changes.
