Practical guide

How to test a webcam beyond simply seeing video

A useful webcam test verifies more than whether a preview appears. Check the actual resolution reported by the video track, the delivered frame rate, aspect ratio, camera selection, lighting, focus behavior, and whether the stream remains stable.

Requested constraints are preferences, not guarantees. The browser and device negotiate a mode based on camera capability, operating-system settings, current use by other applications, and browser policy. Always inspect the actual MediaStreamTrack settings after the stream starts.

The measured frame rate is based on delivered video frames when the browser exposes requestVideoFrameCallback, with a fallback estimate otherwise. It is useful for troubleshooting dropped or irregular delivery but should not be treated as a laboratory camera timing measurement.

Start the camera, choose a 1920×1080 preference, then inspect the actual track settings. If the browser reports a lower resolution or frame rate, close other camera apps, try another device selection, and retest. Capture a snapshot to judge detail and lighting independently of motion.
